Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now claimed the prestigious cup on fourteen separate occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the French league champions and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring early on.

However, Marseille fired twice in the closing moments to take a shock lead. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital leveler in the dying moments to send the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving decisive kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all scored successfully for PSG to seal a convincing shootout win.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this competition for the twelfth time in the past thirteen years.
