Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these treatments need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
