An individual who laced sweets with sedative and distributed them to youngsters at a summer program in the region has confessed to sexual crimes against two boys who were between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight minors and one adult fell ill at the location in July.

The elderly man, from that region, pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges when he stood at the judicial center on the end of the week.

Yet, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was accused of, which was concerning a nine-year-old boy.

The defendant was held in detention before a further hearing on late November.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, detailed the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She stated his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a youth camp which he ran.

The defendant engaged in a "sweet game" with the children, the legal counsel explained, in which he would enter the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to ingest treats "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings Ruben had played this game with the boys "for many years", and children had previously fallen ill the next day.

She explained Ruben had been successful in rationalizing this over a long period as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had worries in summer 2025.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "This year his stepchild had concerns about the situation, justifiably.

"They decided to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel stated items including infant oil, petroleum jelly and injection devices were discovered, and his family member notified the law enforcement about his concerns.

She said Ruben continued to play the "candy game" with six children that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the next day.

"Authorities" had not arrived by that time," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the investigative body, previously told that it was investigating Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.

Mrs Prior said the minors were having difficulty walking due to their condition, so the stepson notified the authorities once more.

She said the man then engaged in the "candy game" in a room of five minors.
