Pick of the Week
This Satirical Thriller
Director Coralie Fargeat's bold critique addresses the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics as well as the feared consequences of ageing. Presence Film
Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries in this nifty paranormal narrative captured wholly from the perspective of the phantom. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their fresh home, the lens – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of conscious of the poltergeist, and it seems protective of her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
The iconic actor embraces his unique fame in this meta comedy caper. He acts as a self-obsessed celebrity playing himself who accepts a $1m payday to attend a celebration in Mallorca for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Hired by the CIA to spy on the potential kingpin, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. This Saturday, 9pm, Channel 4
The Black Phone
The director's locked-room horror stands strong without requiring a follow-up. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has made the children on edge. Once Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. However, the disconnected phone in the room continues to ring, with ghostly voices offering help, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, nighttime, Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the conflict between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish true story of the disgraced televangelist and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who states initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about capitalizing on the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and insincerity, however Chastain succeeds to depict the real-life figure in a likable light. October 14th, late night, on Film4
