The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
