Can You Crack This? The Overlooked Netherlands Invention That Forged the Modern World
There are numerous candidates to claim the title of “world’s greatest innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a new book, however, that honor should go to the mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Prior to automated cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated approximately ten sawyers working over 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven sawmills, the same quantity of processed timber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Owing to this speedy mechanical saw, which turned logs to planks using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders could construct vessels faster compared to anyone else, an advantage that sparked a century of Netherlands maritime, financial as well as cultural dominance in the continent and the globe.
The Original Genuine Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends the writer, was “humanity’s initial authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. A single part transformed its circular motion into up-and-down motion for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism transformed the spinning movement into a sideway’s motion advancing the timber toward the blade. A ratchet system shifted the log forward a measured step per cycle.
“Each element seemed simple on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to combine them in order that the machine acted in a perfectly controlled order, sawing with each downward stroke and moving on every return stroke. It was a remarkably clever application of basic components.”
